Hopefully Reid gets the armband now, what with the LEADERSHIP he’s shown this season.

Fair enough but I still think there is a place for a bit of industrial language and a kick up the arse if certain players aren't putting it in!

Yes, an average player. Really nothing more than that. And nothing like Bobby Moore.

average player??

400 appearances & HOTY how many times?

Someone's pulling your gander, goose.

Potts was a great servant to the club and a thoroughly likeable chap, but an average player and captain. I don't recall Julian being that verbose as captain, but his commitment was certainly an example for others. I liked seeing Noble complain that nobody wanted the ball against Liverpool. That was captain talk.

No it isn't.

Steve Potts??????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: New manager - Moyes? - Moyes confirmed new manager
who can say who was a decent captain?? i'd say Steve Potts as he set an example - bit like you hear said about bobby moore.

as pointed out below football has changed - captains (for me) should be on the same wave length as the manager, uphold his standards and try to pull the squad together.

a decent on-field captain would help us manage games when we are a goal up late on - Nolan appeared to be very good at this.

Re: New manager - Moyes? - Moyes confirmed new manager
This century I'd go for Lomas, Neil, Noble and Nolan as good captains. I do think that captaincy is becoming more difficult as the players are a generally more disparate bunch compared to the past .

The important thing is that the captain must justify his place in the starting eleven and that was an issue for us with Nolan and is now with Noble.

What is missing from our team is a few players who wear their hearts on their sleeve. They don't have to be the best in the team but they are admired by the fans and that mutually boosts moral. Right now I can only think of Ginge as being regularly this type of player.

Agree with goose that Neil was a decent captain. Alvin, too (sorry, forgot to mention him). The rest were, at best, all right. But not much more than that.

Good question. I posted the same question on here maybe 10 or 15 years ago and there were all sorts of replies and differing understandings. At a general level, I suppose it's to effectively rally players to the cause.

"Nobes isn't exactly a "have them up against the wall type" so maybe Ginge or Reid could have helped although Reid hasn't exactly pulled up any trees."

People need to move on. Football isn't like that these days. The precious little angels would probably have the police in.

Our problems are NOT who our Captain is. It literally doesn't matter.

All this shit comes out when teams are doing bad, from the 'experts'.

goose 3:25 Fri Nov 10
Re: New manager - Moyes? - Moyes confirmed new manager
as was Steve Lomas.

Lucas Neil was a pretty decent captain.

Re: New manager - Moyes? - Moyes confirmed new manager
I don't think Noble is getting much help to be honest. In the old days an Alvin, Galey or Bonzo would have knocked a few heads together but we didn't have too many of those characters prior to this season. Nobes isn't exactly a "have them up against the wall type" so maybe Ginge or Reid could have helped although Reid hasn't exactly pulled up any trees.

What is surprising though is that this season there is now Hart and Zabaleta plus an old Southampton Captain has been there for a while so there are leaders but not sure any are willing to kick others up the backside.

Re: New manager - Moyes? - Moyes confirmed new manager
Lewisham 3.03 wrote "The problem is that our fans historically have never accepted a manager that doesn't have a West Ham connection/past".

Our most successful manager arrived at the club with no previous WHU connection whatsoever. And there was none of the supposed "he's not WHU" stuff from fans either at the time.

What does a strong stand out Captain do, Gold blend son?
